The Weeknd Still Pissed Over Grammy Snub

“I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys.”

Published

The Grammys are coming this weekend, and it looks like it’s still bothering The Weeknd.

If you recall, The Weeknd was this years’ biggest snubbed artist. His song Blinding Lights has broken many records, such as longest Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 run. The songs success and album success also landed him the Super Bowl half time show last month.

From the Grammy Committee stand point…..they weren’t “wrong” in what happened. Although it was one of the biggest songs of the year, it was a tough field. Lets start off with the facts. Fact is, they tried to initially submit the song in the R&B genre, which would have given him a bigger chance of winning because R&B acts lately haven’t been as big as him. The committee rerouted him to the POP category, because the song is a POP song. In those categories, he is up against POP Stars like Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, and new comer Doja Cat. They all had pretty big years, and in the POP world, The Weeknd isn’t really the biggest guy out there.

Moving on. A lot of Blinding Lights’ chart success was due to multiple factors, one being a pandemic and another being that he had a lot of radio play. While streams and sales were solid, they weren’t enough to keep him in the Top 10. I looked at a random week in July 2020 and he wasn’t even in Spotify’s Top 10.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, The Weeknd stated he would boycott the awards from now on. “Because of the secret committees,” the Weeknd said, “I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys.

Some would see this statement as him standing up to a long standing, flawed system. For me, he is throwing a temper tantrum. He’s in the music industry to express his creativity and bring his art to life. The awards and accolades are merely bonus. To have this much attitude over a predominately white award show is an example of him feeling as if he was entitled to the awards. Crazy thing about it, he didn’t mention his displeasure for also being snubbed at the NAACP Image Awards.

At the end of the day, you win some, you lose some…but you live to fight another day.

Album Review: Chris Brown releases “Breezy”

Published

By

Let me start out by saying, as a member of Team Breezy, Chris Brown simply missed his mark on revisiting his debut sound. This is something he said we could expect from this album. None the less, the album is still nothing short of fire.

23 tracks are included in the standard edition of the album, and it’s giving you nothing short of the Chris Brown experience. Some songs and subjects can come across as repetitive subject matter wise and lack depth, while others are sure fire hits.

Stand out tracks on first listen for me are, Possessive (feat. Lil Wayne & Bleu), Pitch Black, Sex Memories (feat. Ella Mai), Sleep At Night, and Til The Wheels Fall Off (feat. Lil Durk and Capella Grey).

Oktum Releases Debut EP ‘Tales Of Sunset’

Published

Oktum is a Hatian born & raised producer who is truly ready to take over House Music with the release of his long awaited debut EP ‘Tales Of Sunset’ which truly has been a labor of love. Now although this is his first music release, he’s definitely not new to music. The talented composer grew up engulfed in music as he listened to his fathers music in Haiti as a celebrated musician playing guitar for the band Les Shleu Shleu. As a kid he would listen to so many different genres of music with some of his inspirations ranging from Franz Schubert, Frédéric Chopin, Bob Marley to Dr.Dre and Thievery Corporation. As a teen he was introduced to the idea of production with FL Studios but navigating   a promising career in music seemed far fetched while living in Haiti at a time when crime and kidnappings were at an all time high. Oktum would go on to move to the U.S. living in Illinois and in NYC but unfortunately his passion for music didn’t follow him as the years went on. It wasn’t until he moved to Los Angeles where he truly felt like he could finally get back into music. In 2019 something clicked and he slowly but surely began to tap back into his sound which has evolved tremendously. As he continued to work on his music the world was rocked by the Corona Virus outbreak but what most would consider a setback was truly the opportunity he needed to focus on his music. Now he is finally ready to embark on this new journey with the release of his debut EP ‘Tales Of Sunset’ which features 5 hard hitting tracks which is sure to get house music lovers on the dance floor. Get into the project below which is just a taste of so much more to come.
