First Look: Mary J. Blige in Power Book 2

Published

Power may wrap for good in February, but fans won’t have to live long without their weekly crime-drama fix from the addictive (and extraordinarily popular) Starz series. This summer, the network will unveil a spin-off featuring Mary J. Blige as Monet, a very successful woman in Queens who runs her business “with an iron fist,” explains executive producer Courtney A. Kemp. And EW has the exclusive first look!

Exactly how Monet earns her keep remains a mystery for now, but it’s probably not a stretch to assume that she — like Ghost [Power’s Omari Hardwick] before her — will be dabbling in the wild world of narcotics. It’s an idea that Kemp had been chewing on for nearly two years but didn’t truly take root until reps for Blige approached her about a Power cameo (because she was a big fan, natch).

“Power obviously is a masculine show but has very strong female characters,” Kemp tells EW. (Blige is pictured here with LaToya Tonodeo, who plays Monet’s daughter Diana). “For Mary’s character, we use all the power and presence of the actress to communicate how this is a woman who is remarkable and unique in her abilities. She’s as smart, savvy, and strategic as Ghost ever was, but her learning doesn’t come from books. We always said Ghost was a bookish kid who read all the time. This woman’s acumen comes from the street.”

If you loved what Power had to offer for six seasons, you’ll definitely appreciate Ghost, promises Kemp. “There are some people from the original show as well as a bunch of new characters,” such as Method Man, who will play an ethically challenged lawyer. “It will definitely have a lot of the same elements that you’re used to from Power in terms of criminality, sex, romance, and the legal system. Every scene is still about power.”

Netflix’s ‘Raising Dion,’ From Michael B. Jordan, Renewed for Season 2

Netflix is starting off 2020 with some good news.

The streamer has handed out a second-season renewal for its Michael B. Jordan-produced superhero family drama Raising Dion.

Production on the eight-episode sophomore season will begin this year. A return date for the show, starring Alisha Wainwright and Ja’Siah Young, has not yet been determined.

The renewal arrives days after Netflix released data about its “most popular” shows of 2019, with Raising Dion ranking 10th among Netflix’s original series. It was picked up to series in October 2017.

The show, about a woman who raises her son — who begins to develop superhero-like abilities — following the death of her husband, ranked first among the list of kids and family series. It’s worth noting that Netflix determined its “most watched” lists based only on subscribers watching two minutes of a movie or one episode of a television show. Netflix, like other streamers, does not release actual viewership data. Raising Dion currently has a 61 score among critics and 5.8 user score on aggregation site Metacritic.com.

Carol Barbee will return as showrunner on the series that is produced by Charles D. King’s Macro. Other exec producers include Jordan, who has a recurring role, Kenny Goodman, Kim Roth and Dennis Liu. The season two order is down one episode compared with season one.

Kids and family originals is a key part of Netflix’s originals offerings. The streamer, in its efforts to have something for everyone, competes with the likes of Disney and Nickelodeon in the increasingly competitive market for young viewers.

This list is about an entire performance, not just moments. Many people like to think that the Madonna/Britney/Xtina kiss was the biggest thing in history when it comes to the VMAs, and they aren’t wrong. But that was a MOMENT. These are my favorite PERFORMANCES! Check them out.
